PUBLICATION - VILLAGE MOSAICS OF RAJASTHAN 2011

VILLAGE MOSAICS OF RAJASTHAN provides a photographer's insight into various aspects of the life and culture of village and rural people in the state of Rajasthan, as they go about their everyday lives, whether at work, at school, or at leisure.

Rajasthan, "the Land of Kings" in northwestern India, and the largest of the 28 states of this great Republic, is a fascinating land with a rich heritage of magnificent forts, and splendid havelis and palaces. For the most part, they are now restored historical sites that tell a remarkable and turbulent story of the past. The stunning and varied landscape from the picturesque city of Udaipur, the "City of Lakes" in western Rajasthan, to the sweeping sand dunes of the Thar Desert in the northwestern sector of the state, capture the imagination.

But the real charm and magic of this legendary state are its friendly, warm and hospitable people, especially those who live in the villages and rural areas, who comprise 80 percent of all Rajasthanis. These determined people are a living presence of the past, kniown for their simplicity and grace, whose lives reflect the traditions, values and culture of a bygone era. To spend som e time in the presence of Rajasthanis is a truly rewarding and enriching experience.

The following collection of colour photographs were taken in 2005 and 2011 in a desire to portray a deliberate and honest representation of the village mosaics of Rajasthan and to capture the photographer's emotional experiences of the moment.
