Statues of Buddha and monks just over the border in Myanmar on the outskirts of the town, Tachilek

The inhabitants are members of the Akha Tribe.  Huts are compact and life has changed little in centuries.

Mien women are very stylish dressers in their distinctive red boas and usually large black turbans. This tribe follows a number of Chinese traditions in their obedience to the Taoist religion.  Historically, this tribe has been a follower of Chaing Kai Shek, and they have been living here since the Revolution.
